The Law Foundation, established in February 1980, provides grants to advance public understanding of the law and access to legal services. Its objects for funding are legal education, legal research, law reform, legal aid, legal referral service, law libraries and law scholarships.

The Law Foundation is administered by a Board of Governors responsible for governing the Foundation and making all granting decisions. The Board of Governors is supported by an Executive Director.

LEARN MOREThe Foundation welcomes grant applications from individuals and organizations. To be eligible, the proposed project/program must fall within one or more of the statutory objects, be law-related and benefit the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Law Foundation provides scholarships directly to students for first year studies at any Law School in Canada recognized by the Scholarships Committee, and contributes to universities across Atlantic Canada to provide scholarships to Newfoundland and Labrador students enrolled in their Law Schools.
The Law Foundation offers up to seven Legal Research Awards valued at $750 each to students at Memorial University, and an additional award to MUN Library for legal research materials and resources. The awards are for outstanding research papers on one or more legal issues, or topics treated in a legal context.

The Law Foundation, through discussions held with the Bankers, Trust Companies, and Credit Union Associations in this province, established a procedure for the collection of interest on interest-bearing trust accounts and remittance to the Law Foundation.
