Governor

Mr. Cooper currently teaches as a part-time faculty member with Memorial University of Newfoundland and is an active member of the Province’s Labour Arbitration Panel as well as the Law Society’s Disciplinary Panel and Complaints Authorization Committee.   His contributions to the legal profession include past service as a Bencher and President of the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador as well as President of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada.

Prior to his retirement as Memorial University’s General Counsel on June 30, 2022, Mr. Cooper occupied roles as Associate Vice-President Academic (Faculty Affairs), Director of Faculty Relations and Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Business Administration.  He has also worked as a Partner with McInnes Cooper, practising labour and employment law, and with the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador as Chair of the Labour Relations Board.

Mr. Cooper holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons.) degree from Memorial University, Master of Industrial Relations degree from University of Toronto, and a Bachelor of Laws degree from Dalhousie University.   He also has a CIC.C designation (Certified In-House Counsel – Canada).

Mr. Cooper spends his leisure time with family and friends and enjoys long walks and trips to the country with his golden retriever “Goose”.
